Review of Pink Flamingos (1972) by Rod A — 03 Nov 2009
This film is absolutely hilarious. It's one of the first movies in my chronological film journey that is openly sarcastic and flamboyantly hip in its skewering of American culture. Easy Rider isn't making fun of America.
It's pleading for acceptance and a fulfillment of the original dream. Pink Flamingos slaps you silly for ever believing in the dream in the first place. The grotesqueness of the characters is a reflection of the obscenity in hometown U.
S.A. Lenny Bruce and Diane Arbus noticed the same hypocrisy. The fact that John Waters doesn't take himself with one bit of seriousness is refreshing. He has nothing to lose. Would that someone would lambaste our country with such delicious venom once again.
