Review of Ping Pong Playa (2008) by Lynda B — 05 Mar 2009
Perhaps not the definitive Chinese American film, but Jimmy Tsai's performance as a slacker wannabe baller who sort of discovers his heritage and himself when forced to teach and then play ping pong, is alone worth watching.
It's actually not as corny as that sounds and that's perhaps the best thing about this movie. It pokes fun of all the usual stereotypes and culture-clash without hitting you over the head with it and ends up telling an infectious and funny story.
Plus the movie gets bonus points for having a foriegner who speaks decent Mandarin and the actors for actually playing ping pong without the assistance of CG.
