Review of Pineapple Express (2008) by Panta O — 24 Aug 2012
Typical American stoner action comedy directed by David Gordon Green, and written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg... credible names in the film business! Of course - the movie is funny thanks to the stars Rogen (again) and James Franco who really enjoyed working together! You could almost see that in their eyes... actually, not sure if that was from the weed or chemistry... Whatever it was, Franco was nominated for a Golden Globe award for his performance in this movie.
The inspiration for making Pineapple Express, was Brad Pitt's character in True Romance, a stoner named Floyd. Of course when you have a good team it could be very funny to watch a character get chased by bad guys, even with the reduced budget. According to Rogen, the ideal production budget was $40 million, but due to the subject matter - "because it's a weed movie", as he described it - Sony Pictures allotted $25 million.
Cinematography of this movie is incredible - yes, this must be a first ever stoner movie with excellent cinematography! The whole package is made extremely well. Seth Rogen has an interesting remark on the commentary that "even people who hate the movie admit that it's shot well". If you ask me, it should come with a warning "Extremely funny" attached, especially for the second part of the movie!
