Review of Pina (2011) by Luuk H — 11 Feb 2012
Pina.
Initial Reaction: Pina Colada?
Main Characters.
Pina Bausch: She's a dancing choreographer.
Plot Summary.
This film is about the dancers who worked for Pina Bausch (Pina died in the summer of 2009). It consists mostly of the dances that she choreographed and performed by the dancers.
The dances range from the simple solo acts to the elaborate group dances with striking set pieces.
SCORING.
Main Characters.
We don't get to see much of Pina - except for a few moments when she's interviewed. But I found her interesting; I like her passion for her work and how she comes up with the ideas for her dances. SCORE: 8.
Supporting Cast.
The other dancers are also great to listen to as they talk about how Pina shaped their lives and their profession - but it does get a little redundant after the seventh dancer. SCORE: 8.
Plot.
Watching some of the dances was fun because they were so weird. One dance has the dancer prancing about with a leaf blower. SCORE: 8.
Originality.
I like this film shows us how good Pina is instead of spending a lot of time listening to people say how good Pina is. SCORE: 8.
Violence Factor.
They choreograph dances, not fights. SCORE: 8.
Other Moral Issues.
There are a few dances that are on the risqué side: one where a guy who pulls down his pants in front of several women, and one where the dress of a dances falls off, showing her bare backside (good thing she's lying on her stomach). SCORE: 8.
Final Score (out of 60): 48 % Score: 80%.
A really good film about dancing - too bad few people are going to hear about it.
