Review of Pina (2011) by Elizabeth M — 13 Apr 2012
The most soul numbing, mind dulling film of the year. I went in a healthy, middle aged man and 5 years and 44 hours later came out a decrepit, old man with a brain injury.
There is nothing "artistic," or "innovative" going on here (as the dancers describe their mentor). There is one dance, with one set of body movements, done over and over and over again for the entire career of a choreographer. The dancing is the most repetitious thing I've seen in my lifetime, or, what I can remember of my lifetime now that I suffer from brain damage.
The final blow was a scene in which one woman is crawling along the floor while another woman shovels dirt on her, along with several cut aways to a third woman carrying a tree on her back. Like Federico Fellini never thought of that one... Salvador Dali, but without the mustache or the I.Q. points.
If, however, you suffer from sleep apnea, and need some rest, this is the film for you. My wife fell asleep three times. Unfortunately (and this is how I know I am a damned man), God did need bless me with the same peace and repose.
