Review of Pina (2011) by Collin R — 17 Dec 2012
Pina Bausch made dance accessible to absolute non-believers like me. Saw her show twice in LA, and was gobsmacked each time. Each dancer is trapped in a never-ending loop of their own deeply-personal existentialist angst, and it becomes truly interesting (and thrilling) when they collide with each other on stage.
The scenery/furniture are natural obstacles that they must overcome to connect, albeit briefly, with each other. The 3-D sucks you right into it. The only weakness was the solo dances, that smacked of meaningless, meandering Isadora Duncan lunacy.
