Review of Pillow Talk (1959) by David R — 19 Aug 2007
Albeit a film that follows the over-used and predictable formula of bitter-enemies-that-become-lovers, it has its unique qualities that puts it above the big-name fluff movies of the 1950s and 1960s. Given the year of its release, 1959, I was most shocked by the degree to which the dialogue is sexually frank.
Naturally, I found that this played to Doris Day's persona of the straight-talking, self-confident career woman very well. The dialogue between Day and Hudson is well-crafted and executed to a tee by the leads; however.
the overriding feeling of silliness (it is a comedy, so I do not hold that quality against the film) dumbs down witty exchanges. Without any reservations whatsoever I recommend this film to any fan of the light-hearted romantic-comedy genre.
