Review of Pillow Talk (1959) by Brian R — 27 Jul 2010
This is a great film - more than just a frothy fifties rom-com. The chemistry between Rock Hudson and Doris Day is what makes it truly great. Rock Hudson was all too often dismissed as a lightweight but anyone who has seen "Seconds" (1966) will know he was a tremendous actor with a well-developed dark side and he doesn't put a foot wrong here - charismatic, funny and devil-may-care: it's a perfectly-judged performance.
Doris is prim and proper but all the while she hints at a maelstrom of saucy undercurrents that the viewer hopes Rock will ultimately unleash! The pacing is fast and frenetic throughout. The film uses split-screen very cleverly and the colours and sets positively dazzle.
But one of the greatest delights to me is Allen Jenkins (the voice of Officer Dibble in "Top Cat" and he was also in several of "The Falcon" films with the magnificent George Sanders) as Harry the elevator attendant.
I could listen to his voice all day. A+.
