Review of Pilgrimage (2017) by David C — 11 Aug 2017
This movie is beautifully filmed and acted. I'd have preferred less intense violence. Some parts of it remind me of the History Channel's show, Vikings, particularly the development of themes of the religions of the celtic people vs the Normans, and the heartfelt, courageous piety of the Irish monks vs the tyranny of the Norman priest and the Norman nobility.
It's presented clearly, in this movie, that the Normans and the Church haven't learned anything from the disastrous crusades, except perhaps some new ways of cruelty. Some other reviewers seem interested in comparing this movie to Game of Thrones, which is a silly thing to do; this movie is historically accurate and purely realistic.
It seems likely, in time, to be regarded as an art film, and to achieve a growing audience as years pass.
