Review of Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman (2005) by Keith T — 31 Mar 2008
An excellent film, although very dark in subject matter.
At the beginning you see Timothy Spall's excellently played Albert Pierrepoint as a man who is carrying out a rather strange and macabre job in as professional a way as he can. As the years go by you see the strain of what he is doing begin to tell, especially in the sheer volume of killings of war criminals in the second half of the 1940s and Pierrepoint's part in the consequences of some of the dodgier convictions of the 1950s (Derek Bentley, Timothy Evans et al).
