Review of Pieces (2013) by David. B — 09 Jan 2008
Haha. The gore hounds out there will either be laughing along with this awesomely bad spanish slasher flick and/or smiling at the amount of chain-saw decapitations we get here. It's not a deep script, but does manage to create a slasher atmosphere us fans enjoy so much.
It starts with a scene that might have inspired David Arquetts introduction to his debut feature film 'The Tripper' where a young child is accused of being a dirty boy by his mother after she finds him putting the pieces of a puzzle together which deciphers a picture of a naked pin-up girl. The boy mildly overreacts by leaving the room momentarily and then coming back in with a chain-saw and forces it through his mothers skull. That was rather unexpected and shocked me. I knew then I was in for one hell of a slasher flick. I had heard a heap about this film before finding myself a VHS copy of it. All of the hype was on the gore and so it should. It was written by Joe D'amato whom has a huge pedigree. He also wrote Anthropophagus which is a slasher flick I am desperate to see and a cult classic amongst slasher fans. The direction is kind of messy, but thanks to the lunatic spirit the makers possessed PIECES is nothing less then hypnotically entertaining.
The film actually starts 40 years after the boy had massacred his mother. College girls are turning up dead on a Boston campus. It seems like the boy with anger management is back and creating a 3D version of his beloved puzzle with decapitated body parts. This brings in Lt. Braken(Christoph George) who doesn't even bother looking for the only killer old enough to be the killer in question(Lol), but relies on an undercover Tennis Coach(Linda Day) to lure the killer.
Fans of slasher films will love this as it is a slasher flick in it's purest and most basic form..
