Review of Pieces (2003) by Alan L — 31 Aug 2012
This eighties trashy eurohorror lifts its start from Argento's Profondo Rosso with a disturbed kid swinging an axe into his sexually repressed mother's head! 40 years later, a black gloved psycho killer is cutting up female students with a chainsaw, taking pieces from each victim, but to what end? This is a sleazy, bad taste film that gives up on having any mystery or suspense and just goes for one gory murder after another.
However, it must be said that the the gore effects are well done. The dialogue is so bad at times it's really funny, in fact the whole thing is nuts. There's a tennis pro (who looks really crap at tennis) going undercover for the police at the University as a tennis instructor! The Boston University is supposedly very busy, but there's nobody else around when the murders take place.
And the black trenchcoated killer, wearing a black fedora and sporting a big bright yellow noisy chainsaw, can seemingly just walk around anywhere he likes without being noticed! Yes, Pieces is tasteless, sexist, bloody and bonkers.
But it's never dull. And for those that can handle everything mentioned above it's kind of fun to watch.
