Review of Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) by Kate M — 03 Jul 2007
Australia's most celebrated director, Peter Weir, finds his footing here in the Australian wild where his protagonists lose theirs. A truly haunting, horrifying story about the disappearance of several schoolgirls at a place called Hanging Rock.
Sofia Coppola's "The Virgin Suicides" draws heavily from this film and reconstitutes its spirit as a wispier, lesser-but-still-likeable version of the original. A perfect film.
