Hypnotic, stunning, and deeply unsettling. a movie in a large sense about the power and violence of nature: both the outdoors and human nature. there's an undeniable erotic (homo) charge to this movie that becomes disturbing when sexual brutality is implied so strongly.

..this film is also obviously about repression among turn-of-the-century upper-classes and the hysteria it generates...i was mesmerized by how effortlessly weir weaves together so many characters and story-lines.

this is a remarkable film...
