Review of Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) by William L — 19 Feb 2009
An absolutely haunting tale of an inexplicable disappearance. The genius of this films not only lies in its lack of conclusions, but also in its repressed sexuality characteristic of the time period in which it is set, its juxtapostion of civilization and nature, and its aboriginal spirituality.
I found this film more deeply frightening than any horror film. Peter Weir is the least known great auteur still working.
