Review of Pickup on South Street (1953) by Clifton F — 04 Sep 2007
The good: A brassy, sensual Jean Peters, an excellent performance by the always welcome Thelma Ritter, and some sharp, expressive camera work that makes the most of location and faces.
The bad: Not really that great of a story. The relationship that develops between Peters and Widmark has a pretty thin basis, even by the standards of the day, and the plot, such as it is, is pretty weak and never that gripping. This might be okay in a greater noir, steeped in atmosphere and character, but the characters aren't all that interesting, and the dialogue, though occasionally plummy and hard-boiled to a tee, is mostly pretty weak.
