Review of Pickup on South Street (1953) by Kayla K — 22 Jun 2008
With my mulling time, I now really like it.
It's about a girl, Candy, who is acting as a fence for an ex-boyfriend. She thinks she's transporting just a wallet, but it's a secret formula on a hidden piece of film that's the real delivery. On the train, she gets pick-pocketed.
She is then pressured to get it back. She finds the pick-pocket and falls in love with him. He doesn't trust her so she finds herself in the caustic middle of the ex, the pick-pocket, the police, and the communists.
She chooses to go in the direction of love and gets a lot of people and herself really hurt/dead over it.
Luckily she is ok and earns the trust of her pick-pocket love interest.
There is so much going on, yet the movie tells it 100 times more succinctly than I ever could.
