Review of Pick-up (1975) by Nathan N — 02 May 2009
One star might be somewhat of a generous rating for this terrible movie. It didn't quite warrant the half-star I usually save for particularly "grating" movies; however, despite not being grating, this stupid thing was creepy (that clown! Maureen! closeups of SNAKES!), and sleazy and pretentious -- and not even in an entertaining or redeemable way. Nothing in the entire 75-minute running time even REMOTELY made any sense!
(Maybe if I was "tripping" I would "get it"; if so, I think I'll pass on that trip.).
I gave the movie a whole star mostly for the curiosity and nostalgia of seeing this particular slice of the mid-70s captured on film (sleaziness and all). If this movie was made today, I'd hate it even more, but the era DOES make it just a little more interesting to watch. Also, I was mildly amused by the over-acting of that mobile-home salesman (or whoever that guy on the phone was supposed to be) and some of the cheesy, 70s soft rock used in the soundtrack (particularly that oh-so-romatic "Touch Me").
Otherwise -- to paraphrase an earlier reviewer -- I bought this cheap, and I got what I paid for!
