Review of Pi (1998) by Anjana R — 09 Apr 2012
What Darren Aronofsky gives us in "Pi" is enthrallment, pure enthrallment. To create such a richly textured film on the first go-around is no small feat and Aronofsky cements his artistic style almost immediately.
The camerawork is stunning and the decision to use 16mm black-and-white only enriches the entire feel of the movie. There are some movies I love for plot... this isn't one of them. There are also some movies I love for the experience... and "Pi" immerses the audience instantaneously into its delicious claustrophobia.
The fact that Aronofsky manages to captivate the viewer with little plot and understated character development speaks volumes as to his directorial strengths. And what little we do see of the supporting characters only makes us want more (especially considering Margolis' performance).
The imagery drips of vitality, the sound effects work in harmony, and the camerawork excites. What else could you ask of a film?
Can you tell I'm an Aronofsky fan?
