Review of Pi (1998) by Dermit Z — 16 Feb 2013
Pi is about the unseen, from the mystery of a number, an esoteric organisation, corporate mafia, seductive neighbour, patterns in the stock market, God, and the thoughts of Max himself. There's a throbbing, pulsing energy that carries masterfully through the entire movie, as if we were trapped inside a womb, destined never to see the light of day.
Despite being a witness to the graphic trauma, I never felt abused as I did in Requiem for a Dream, which seemed to be more shock for shock's sake. In Pi, every cruelty is so meticulously self-imposed, that we can entirely empathise with the plight of Max's ultra-disciplined life without him once having to willingly expose his dignity.
He carries the burdens of human salvation and the dissolution of inner city life on his shoulders, and we pity him.
