Review of Pi (1998) by David M — 07 Jun 2010
Really, really weird. Darren Aronofsky was always one of those directors that I wanted to get into, but never did. "Pi", his first film, is pretty good. The filmmaking itself is impressive: how he edits and sets up shots is quite good. The story is intriguing, all about numbers and mathematics in the world. But there was one thing I was missing: closure. The movie doesn't really end, it just stops. *MILD SPOILERS* I wanted to know what Max's take on the number was, but it doesn't hurt the film that much. It's one of those films that just hooks you by it's premise and leaves you to make sense of the proceedings and ending; that's what kept me going through it. I'll probably watch it again to get the full scope of it; I recommend you do the same.
One last interesting tidbit: the film's running time is 1 hour, 23 minutes and 45 seconds. 1:23:45. Mr. Aronofsky, you clever devil...
