Review of Pi (1998) by Felipe S — 08 Feb 2011
Insane is the word to describe Aronofski's debut feature. It's so beautifully shot and filmed you would not really care about what's happening, but the fact that it's treating a very interesting subject makes it even better. The bad thing is maybe that it's trying so hard to be smart with its subject it sometimes goes too deep for a normal viewer (non-scientific) to understand. I thought at some times I was really watching a Lynch film ; it's complex, it's confusing, it's nightmarish. I would rather class it in my horror section rather than under thrillers. The sound effects are perturbing, but very effective. Sean Gullette delivered a believable enough performance for the difficult role he's been handed.
A path for everything that would come next : Requiem, Fountain.....
