Review of Pi (1998) by Vero S — 25 Mar 2011
Aronofsky is insane. It suits him. Watching Requiem for a dream and Black swan took me to this brilliant opera prima of his, in which I could so clearly appreciate his amazing control of the camera seen in his following films.
My head ached for a while after watching this. It takes some time to figure out, and, like most of his films, I think the beauty of it is that you never fully get to understand it, but you somehow know there's some sort of intellectual gold mine behind it.
I think that's even more present in this one and more relevant to the story, since the plot itself revolves around an unknown and almost forbidden mathematical key to understanding reality. But, then again, that's also very Aronofsky-like: even his directing will tell the story he sets out to narrate, and just like the camera dances with you in Black swan, you get tremendous headaches when Max does in Pi.
I can't help but hate how much I love Aronofsky - I can't not watch his movies, but to watch them physically hurts. Luckily, it's worth the pain.
