Review of Pi (1998) by Spencer S — 16 May 2011
"1) Mathematics is the language of nature. 2) Everything around us can be represented and understood through numbers. 3) If you graph the numbers of any system, patterns emerge, therefore, there are patterns everywhere in nature.".
Director Darren Aronfsky's low budget directorial debut was a critically acclaimed winner. Pi is a psychological madhouse that centers around a mathematician's mental spiral into complete pschological oblivion. It's a haunting film complete with a score that only nightmares are made of. One of those trippy films that only Aronofsky is capable of pulling off. A haunting, maddening, intensely cerebral, post-modern black and white brain-busting film capable of inducing the viewer with bouts of psychosis. So wild and mentally absorbing that it's a highly entertaining film. Original as well. Pi was the start of Aronofsky's career, a career that blossomed into a complete Hollywood success story.
