Review of Pi (1998) by Lanny B — 15 Mar 2014
Constantly amazed at how different personalities/people can look at the same art and see vastly different things. Pi blows me away. I have friends, intelligent friends, that have a strong distaste for it.
For me, this movie is a clinic in the basics of plot, and the film as a whole attacks the thriller genre in a manner that, frankly, should be observed and emulated. Aronofsky's work in all areas of this film captivates me.
From Brian Emrich's provocative approach to sound (he's a master by the way) to how Aronofsky captures Max's spiral into madness, this film makes anyone with a pulse lean towards the screen.
In addition, Sean Gullete's performance is outstanding. His work, particularly with his monologue to the Hasidic Jews at the climax of the film, simply can't be outdone. His is a driven performance, and it's no wonder why Aronofsky chose to work with him in his subsequent films.
Shame he's not more well known. See this film, but be prepared to think. There's no enjoyment here if you're multitasking.
