Review of Philosophy of a Knife (2008) by Paul K — 14 Dec 2008
What could have been a serious, hard hitting documentary is in fact a series of over long, repetitive artistic(?) reconstructions of 'experiments' that occured in Unit 731.
The industrial soundtrack and MTV style editing of the reconstructions - special FX that look like they are out of a Lucio Fulci movie - interweaved with real photos and stock footage, are like watching one of the most seriously disturbing events of the 20th century being turned into a NIN or Marilyn Manson video. An insult really.
And at an unecessary 4 and a half hours, its a shame the editor wasn't the one using the knife more.
