Review of Philomena (2013) by J.e. A — 25 Mar 2014
Finally got around to watching this last night. Breathtaking and yet subtle. Stephen Frears employs similar efforts from The Queen. Dench is (as always) amazing, but for me it was Steve Coogan who's understated performance (and surprising ability to hold his own against Dench's usual scene-chewing awesomeness) that stole the proverbial show.
I had little knowledge of the historical background of the subject and was delighted that it remained "British" and didn't devolve around the Second Act's turn with the revelation about the son (an American film would have made the movie entirely about that.
.. the Brits are so wonderfully sensible on these matters). Just an excellent 90 minutes of British film. Wonderful.
