No longer able to ignore the decades that have haunted her since her young son was taken from her in a forced adoption, Philomena Lee (Judi Dench) enlists the help of troubled journalist Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) to find him.
Along the way both discover their limitations of religious faith as well as new found admiration for each other's compassion.
