Review of Philomena (2013) by Adam E — 24 Oct 2014
The movie is nuanced, Dench is so effective, you see the pain of 50 years with her child stolen from her in those worn eyes. Coogan the counter-point to her is equally great with the build up of rage, someone on the siidelines wanting to see the bad guy dealt with.
The story is very human, many will be able to feel the pangs of pain that Dench puts forth so impressively. The story could have been hammed up, drug on but it wasn't, it was exceptionally written for the screen and the chemistry between Coogan and Dench feels human and not forced.
