Review of Philomena (2013) by Spencer K — 08 Jan 2015
I didn't really know much about Philomena when I went into it besides it was based on a true story. The Oscar nominations has just been announced and I was scrambling to see all the Best Picture nominees before the big night.
I was completely floored by the end of the film. It was an emotional, bitter-sweet, heartfelt film yet also ripped my heart out of my chest and was stomped on the floor into a million pieces. It was so sad that everybody in the theater, literally every single person, was in tears.
If a film has the power to do that to an entire theater that's saying something that you did something right. What really works here are the two lead performances of Judi Dench and Steve Coogan. These two give Oscar worthy, pitch perfect performances that work so well with this film.
Judi Dench's character moved me emotionally and mentally in this film and I was rooting for her throughout the entire film. All I can really say, is that you must see this film. it's powerful, emotionally resonant, and simplistic in its nature yet huge in its subject matter.
See this film. one of the best of 2013.
