Review of Philomena (2013) by Dana F — 24 Feb 2014
I loved, loved, LOVED this movie. Quite a surprise, I wouldn't have even seen it if it weren't nominated for Best Picture this year, and what a tragedy that would have been. It's my favorite of the year (so far.
.. will see the last 3 nominees this weekend). I was expecting just a "ho-hum" drama, but this one really blew me away. I literally don't think I can say anything bad about it. It's sweet and funny and sad and most of all, heartfelt.
The script is wonderful, the dynamic between Steve Coogan and Judi Dench is a treat to watch, and, what's even better is that it's a really great story that had me totally engrossed by the first scene.
The movie also explores deeper themes of faith and forgiveness, equally showing both the skeptical (Coogan) and faithful (Dench) viewpoints, so that in the end, you really don't know who is right.
A gem of a film, don't miss it!!!
