Review of Philomena (2013) by Bill C — 26 Nov 2015
A brilliant Jeff Pope/Steve Coogan screenplay unfolds as a perfectly developed mystery under the steady hand of veteran director Stephen Frears (The Queen). Coogan and Judi Dench as Philomena Lee share an unexpected chemistry seen so rarely that we are hooked from the outset. This film is seamless, clever, funny, tragic, full of suspense and in the end, genuinely wise; I could not look away.
Philomena was nominated for four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay for Coogan and Pope, Best Actress for Dench, and Best Original Score for Alexandre Desplat.
