Review of Philadelphia (1993) by Artistew A — 08 Jul 2010
Gay. Homo. Queer. Faggot. Whatever you want to call these people they're still people dam it with a heart a brain and with blood, sure they've got a different mind to you and me but that's no reason to discriminate against them!
And these prejudices that we all hold dear inside us can be the death of our pride and reason on what is right or wrong, and this is exactly what Joe Miller (Washington) realises about homosexuals by the end of his tear-jerker about understanding something you do not have yourself.
Andrew Beckett (Hanks) is an excellent lawyer who has just been promoted and things have never been better for him...
Until he is one day told he is HIV positive and there is a extremely high chance he will die.
The suddenly out of the blue the company he works for fires him on the spot because of something he left until the last minute (Which wasn't his faught) even though this is the only major split up he's ever done in his career.
So he decides to bring the pain to the company with the help of homophobic super lawyer Joe Miller, seems like a bad choice right? Miller thought so to, but he neevr realised it would be the most life changing case in all of his career past, present or future.
The films brings out everything that homosexuals have been insulted for and lays it all out on the table to everyone and shows us that no matter what your beliefs are you cannot simply end a mans life just because of this because it's against the law.
AIDS is one of the biggest things that is used in jokes and gags in many comedy shows and TV series and sure they are funny, but when you see the conseqeunces of what the virus can do i'm pretty sure even 100 episodes of south park making AIDS jokes will change you opinion...
Two perfect performances from the leads, Tom Hanks deserved that Oscar 100% and a message that punches you straight in the balls Philadelphia painfully brings us down to earth on what this problem of being homophobic.
5/5.
