Review of Philadelphia (1993) by Peter A — 14 Jun 2009
Overrated. Even the Springsteen song isn't as good as the Academy would have you believe. The way it manipulates its audience would be unforgivable if not for the fact that its objectives seem to have been achieved.
I remember enough of the 80s and early 90s to actually remember the fear AIDS inspired. And as silly as the idea seems now that you could contract AIDS by touch, it was once pretty widespread. This movie helped to change the public perception of AIDS patients and deserves some credit for that, even if the means to that end disqualify it from appreciation under any other terms.
