Review of Phenomenon (1996) by Derek H — 27 Aug 2010
This is a reality-check of a movie. Makes it clear, the difference between movies that have so much more to say but are limited by the conventions of film running time, and movies that get the basic foundation of unoriginal drama and required dialogue and plot to create a move-going experience you can fathom enough to buy the ticket.
Obviously, I'm leaning toward the former. It leans on the fence more than I'd like, but I'm sure the actors like Travolta and Duvall get the point enough to deliver performances that ring true with the audience in terms of what their characters represent.
All in all, its a movie that can misinterpreted and overlooked easily as bad, drama-induced garbage.. but look more closely. It has much more to say than what you think.
