Review of Phenomena (1985) by Jason H — 30 Sep 2008
A baby Jennifer Connelly who can telepathically communicate with the insects of a wheelchair-bound scientist who is cared for by a razor-wielding chimpanzee searches for a mutant dwarf who kills young women from the local Swiss boarding school with a pole-arm. In other words...brilliant.
Actually, it's weird how serious and how ridiculous Argento's work can be all at once. Beautiful cinematography, weird video-era experimentation, odd pauses in all the dialogue, some damn spooky scenes, and a climax that had me laughing almost hysterically. And yet, it was good. Definitely my favorite cult film from this point forward.
