Review of Phenomena (1985) by Brian B — 01 Jun 2009
"Phenomena" works best when viewed as a contemporary fairy tale. The similarities to "Suspiria," including the intimidating school, devious faculty, supernatural phenomena, and the virginal heroine, are all ingredients in the fairy tale framework.
The film is less visually delirious than "Suspiria," but the story is taken to greater heights of absurdity. Jennifer Connelly, in her second film, gives a quietly powerful performance. As with so many of Argento's films, stopping to contemplate the plot would only detract from the visceral and visual experience.
