Review of Phantoms (1998) by Katrina B — 29 Sep 2007
"Phantoms" is a mish-mash of half-concocted ideas, moving genres so often you don't know if it's a horror movie, science fiction, action-thriller, or even dark comedy. Essential moments of the movie were stolen from other (better) projects, like "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and Stephen King's "It".
There are some acceptable performances, especially from Liev Schreiber and Nicky Katt, but the rest of the cast - most notably the usually adept Peter O'Toole - give less than inspired turns as stupid people who get what they so obviously deserve.
The screenplay, based on the novel by Dean Koontz and adapted for the screen by him as well, is choppy and lackluster, with some very cheesy dialogue to sit through. And the big bad, when finally revealed, looks more like a pap smear than any real threat .
.. best left alone.
