Review of Phantom Thread (2017) by Garrettfoster — 27 Jan 2018
A Gothic period piece drama that's at once subtle and absurd. A masterful evocation of romance between tortured minds and souls. A sumptuous, visually appetizing formal exercise in which not a single shot feels out of place. An entrancing and darkly comedic fable about the exacting standards of the creative process and the alienation that it entails. And some altogether undefinable “phantom thread” that effortlessly weaves them together.
It’s absolutely mesmerizing and up there with PTA’s very best. The best film of the year.
