Review of Phantom Thread (2017) by Ginak — 22 Jan 2018
Anybody still remember the frog rain in Magnolia? Critics wrote at the time that audience members either “go with it” and love it or don’t and hate it. It seems to me that Phantom Thread is a more accessible film than Magnolia, but you can still have the same problem with it as with the frog rain or perhaps any Paul Thomas Anderson film.
I found Phantom Thread fascinating, and the acting splendid. It’s a film about greatness (in a minor art called fashion) and obsession, which may be what you need to be great in anything. It’s also about how people choose to live their lives – or maybe it’s not really a choice.
It’s a fascinating film, and I enjoyed it.
