Review of Phantom Thread (2017) by Dylan G — 25 Dec 2017
Favorite film of 2017. While treading over some familiar themes, I feel that Anderson has entered a new stage of his career, mixing some old stylistic influences with brand new ones.
Day -Lewis, Krieps, and Manville are all top notch. I'd even argue that break-out Vicky Krieps was the strongest performer here.
I'm afraid if I say anything about the story I will spoil it, and there is a major bit of misdirection that was incredible.
The photography was astounding as I've come to expect from Anderson's films, but without a Director of Photography, I was a bit worried. But his team of gaffer, camera man and himself paid off wonderfully, with some grainy but deep images, very classically lit. It also speaks volumes to Anderson's director of the camera that a film that mostly takes place in an English Manor feels huge the whole time and not constrained.
