Review of Phantom Thread (2017) by Facebook U — 25 Jan 2018
Watching 'Phantom Thread' feels like hanging off the end of a giant version of one of those long, floaty ribbon things that dancers sometimes use. Most of the experience flows gracefully, with each twirl and spin fading into the next.
And then there's the occasional snap that causes a loss of grip, and it leaves you just kinda falling for a little while, before it swiftly swoops under you and allows you to grab back on. There's no ribbon dances in this movie, but not all review analogies can be properly thematic.
The performances are stellar, with everyone involved giving their best thus far (including Daniel Day-Lewis). The cinematography was beautiful. And the score is the best film score to be composed since Greenwood's for 'The Master'.
Every technical element here is top notch, as is the film in its entirety. 'Phantom Thread' is another master work in Paul Thomas Anderson's evergrowing collection.
