Review of Phantom Thread (2017) by Carol L — 29 Sep 2018
Ugh. Yes, there is a lot of visual beauty and excruciating attention to visual and stereotypical period details. Many people spend quite a lot of time trying to avoid dysfunctional relationships like this - why would anyone want to watch one for the entire length of a movie? I've heard this referred to as how creative people are.
No, this is how dysfunctional people who are indulged and caretaken "are". I found nothing inspiring or meaningful in this story. Even that lovely music somehow felt lobotomized in this setting.
I didn't find the air of detachment to be dreamy, though it did seem a like fantasy land. But more like an empty, avoidant fantasy instead of one of which to aspire.
