Review of Phantom Thread (2017) by Karen G — 27 Dec 2017
Movie was incredible. Portrayal of the British Garment industry was very well done. Saw this movie on the opening day and received a booklet about the movie. Saw the film on 70mm. Projectionist messed up the sound, missed the first line of the movie, given a free voucher to see another movie when I exited.
Daniel Day Lewis is such a gifted actor, its scary to see the range of his talents. Great emotion throughout the film, weaving clever/witty dead pan humor. Thought the ending was dark and twisted, didn't see it coming.
Vicky Krieps is adorable, she did an excellent job and meshed well with Daniel Day Lewis, who is always a tough act to follow. Music was excellent, great score. The movie is sure to win for costume design, the different varieties of dresses was very interesting.
The film was very detailed and exciting to watch. Oh, one more criticism I had about the film, was these scenes at the beginning of the movie where the shot was taken from the top/back of the car, (I think it was an older volkswagon bug model, maybe?) I felt that it was jumpy, and kind of distracting.
It's a strange camera angle that I cannot recall I've seen before. I'm always excited to see Directors/Cameramen trying new stuff, but this one was unnecessary and didn't work well. I've seen so many movies this week, its possible I am mixing this shot up with another film.
