Review of Phantom Thread (2017) by Jacob M — 07 Feb 2018
Phantom Thread - Review (2017).
The Good.
Paul Thomas Anderson fantastic Direction.
Daniel Day-Lewis is fantastic as always in sadly his final performance, its a very subtle performance even though his character is sometimes likeable sometimes toxic.
Lesley Manville is also fantastic in a very underated not talked about performance, who becomes a muse then his lover.
Vicky Krieps is also really good in a performance that's not being talked about, even though sometimes her character is a whiney bitch sometimes.
The Narrative's humor is really good and the Romantic tension is very intoxicating.
Its definitely a love letter to classic cinema.
Jonny Greenwood's phenomenal score.
The cinematography is fantastic.
The Bad.
This is a nit pick even though DDL is fantastic I would of probably wanted more since this is his final performance possibly.
Even after a certain thing happens and he realises life is too short he's still a asshole to her and she's still a whiney bitch sometimes, but I guess that's why their relationship is toxic.
Something happens in the film that doesn't get explained or ever get brought up until the very end and its basically a choice at the end and it didn't quite work for me.
It could be very slow moving to some people (its not for everyone).
Overall: This is a surprise to me cause PTA made me care about a man who loves his work in making dresses and making me care about this toxic relationship, its definitely a step up from Inherent Vice, but sadly does falter through the last I think 30 minutes, some might like the ending, some might not.
Overall Grade: B+.
