Review of Phantom Thread (2017) by Wayne K — 28 Feb 2018
"Phantom Thread"'s set design, costume department & various props bring 50s London back to life & achieve an artistically & aesthetically beautiful film. The soundtrack doesn't take bold chances but instead chooses to delicately tip-toe in the background, providing an ever-energetic but perfectly structured flow that works well with the eccentric character of Reynolds & the surroundings of his house.
Day-Lewis is spectacular as the imperious Reynolds & finds his match in the eyes of Alma (Krieps) who is also brilliant in her performance. The story is often dark as well as comedic & dramatic but ultimately it poses (& tries to answer) the paradox question of "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?".
