Review of Phantom of the Paradise (1974) by Kayla K — 22 Jun 2008
I started this on Monday, but went to Son of Rambow, so I came back and watched this on Tuesday.
Once again, I'm in love with the colors!
The premise is so great. The greatest rock producer Swan (Paul Williams) gets everybody to do what he wants, either by his power as a person, or by contract and manipulation. There is this guy, Winslow, who re-writes Faust ( I love allusions and foreshadowing!). To get his piece open the Paradise, owned by Swan, he signs a contract...in blood. Swan is then able to steal his music, send him to prison and other attrocities until he is left like a bird-like musical robo-cop with the grossest capped teeth.
He is then swayed to write for swan if this girl he thinks is cute, Phoenix, get to sing his songs. He obsessively writes songs for her. Foiled again! Swan has glam-rock god Beef sing the songs (who is Mr. Putterman in Terrorvision... consider all his movies qued!). Winslow, the Phantom, kills all who sing Phoenix's songs! And gets revenge on the eternally youthful Swan.
Yay!
