Review of Phantom of the Paradise (1974) by Aren B — 19 May 2010
DePalma at his best. This film is mad, energetic, gaudy, loud, crazy, and utterly ridiculous but that's what makes it so fantastic. An update of both "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Dr. Faustus" it tells the story of a vengeful composer, a rising young starlett, and the devil (The devil being portrayed by the ever so wonderful Paul Williams, whose musical numbers are unforgettable).
One complaint: I can't get enough of it.
