Review of Phantom of the Paradise (1974) by Shaun B — 30 May 2013
Too many flaws outweigh the good for me, but this is a strict love it/hate it film for all but the most mundane of viewers. It's a decent popcorn flick that's fun and has its moments, but I don't understand how a film that marries The Phantom of the Opera with Faust and The Picture of Dorian Gray along with the typically stylish and Hitchcockian feel of most De Palma's work and yet fails to keep me fully engaged for the entire 90 min.
spectacle. Too many palms to the forehead and I'm not a big fan of musicals especially from 1970s era will remind me to never watch this one again.
