Review of Phantom (2013) by Ross W — 15 Jan 2014
A low budget and understated film. Feels less about saving the world, as its plot premise suggests, rather than saving one's soul from mediocrity, failure, and regret. Some of the lines which seem to unrealistically suggest American exceptionalism should not be seen as such, rather it should be understood as a Jungian projection of the Captain's hopes for himself onto his enemies, the US. If the US can show compassion and empathy, maybe he can be saved from his demons.
I enjoy submarine cgi, for some childish reason, but the movie would have done better to keep it all in the sub, for the sake of emphasizing what the story was really about.
